Edit: Oh right, I forgot to mention it before, but the two/three main ways of writing "Akira" in kanji gives it the meaning of "Shine" or "Bright". So, yes, the name is meaningful, picked (on a meta-perspective) for maximum irony.
...And since Kirara means "sparkle", well, Akira-kun is now extra shiny now, after turning into Akirarara ("Sparklyra"). Or sparkly. Shine-sparkly. Sparkleshine... wait, now it's starting to sound like the name of an MLP character.
