They are still teasing it. But well, does sound like it's closer now.

It is slated for official broadcast next year (2022). They already announced that around New Year's month in commemoration of 2021.

i wonder will Sami be more than just a cameo this time that WON'T get written out of the BD. It's literally Shiratsuyu, the anime aka K-on but with shipgirls. They aren't be that cruel, are they?

As Shigure is announced main character, this season should be talking about Leyte...
And Samidare didn't get to see Leyte so her coming as a cameo is already an accomplishment.
And considering she's not as popular as many other girls, it's hard for her to be included.

I do hope the second season improves on the first. I've been watching it and it's... I think the best word I can think of for it is insubstantial, followed by indecisive. It seems like they weren't sure if they wanted it to be some kind of war story or a character-driven comedy, and it ends up doing a poor job of the former and a passable job of the latter. There's not enough development of the world beyond the naval base, or a sense of what the larger strategic goals are, to get invested in the idea of the girls winning the war. The girls aren't given any kind of backstory or origins. We never see what problems the Abyssals are supposedly causing. An idependant Admiral character exists, but never talks or appears on screen so he isn't really much of a character and feels pointless. The individual battles don't have a whole lot of tension. The story wants to play parallels to history but never actually talk about or examine history. But when they want to be funny? It actually does a pretty good job. Heck, the best episode I've seen thus far is the one with the Akatsuki-class entering the curry contest. That had no attempts at action and benched Fubuki in favor of focusing on the more colorful Akatsuki and her sisters. The art-less the 3D models used when they're on the water- is actually pretty good, with detailed and well-drawn environments.

I hope Season 2 is better, but the cynical part of me suspects it's going to be a rehash of the first season, only with Shigure and the Battle of the Surigao Strait replacing Fubuki and the Battle of Midway.

The movie was no doubt better, but the way it used up one of the best cards they had in their deck(abyssals are sunken ship girls) somewhat poorly is worrisome.

The slice of life parts are enjoyable. Particularly the ones that focus on the 6thDesDiv.

The actual war bits? All suck. And stupid tactics too that just shatter suspension of disbelief (there were quite a few fancomics that made fun of the Admiral and Nagato's tactical decisions. As satire).

Then there's also the weird incongruity with some of the... well... real-life historical references. Most notable I suppose is the constant harping about Fubuki being special because she's a Special-type destroyer... despite there being other Special-type destroyers around, most notably the entire 6thDesDiv. (post #1978541 makes fun of this)

Then there's that waifu Fubuki scene that just torpedoes the whole thing and makes out the Admiral as being an utter incompetent. So instead of Fubuki being shortlised and inserted into pivotal roles because of her talent and potential... it's the Admiral (already an incompetent with questionable tactics) just showing blatant favoritism instead (some even call it a director self-insert). I mean, sure, players do that all the time, but when you transplant this into a supposedly 'dramatic' story with an actual war going on, the whole thing just falls to bits.

Overall, if I were to describe it in one word... it would be shallow, followed by schizophrenic.

I hope so too. But sadly I don't have much confidence.

The sad thing is that they can just probably... pick any long-running Kancolle fancomic series, then animate that, and *BAM* instant winner. Ido's being the most notable, but there's also a lot of other gems.

But you know, Kadokawa... they mismanage their IPs all the time... (*looks over at KemoFri*)

Agreed. Overall it's actually okay, but there were lots of wasted potential.

Decided not to watch the movie despite others saying that it's good and redeems the TV series. I realized that it's like being offered dessert as an apology for a terrible meal. :I

Still hopeful about the upcoming 2nd season despite all that, because it's Shigure after all.

Under that ridiculous argument the 2nd season IS yet another apology meal. Can't you just watch them, view them like they are (a product developed for a certain purpose and time unrelated between them) and get over it? So much drama for products that are planned themselves on the fly.

That's a really weird analogy. Assuming the dessert is free, I would certainly accept it. Who turns down a material apology? Not as good as just getting your money back, sure, but acting like the meal negatively defines the dessert, when the reviews claim the dessert to be good, is strange.

That's more like saying, "I played this developer's first game and disliked it, so I refuse to play the sequel even though everyone says it's good. But I'm still really looking forward to the third game!" What a strange sense of principle.
