If you try this game, I strongly recommend using the 4th option (manual control) most of the time. Otherwise your tanks will kind of go nuts and make bad decisions, since the AI frankly sucks. This is a turn-based game, and you can change the selection for each vehicle before any turn. In manual control, it will display the available movement area and the field of fire for the chosen vehicle on the hex grid of the map. (Those are not shown in the automatic modes.) You can position the fields of fire to cover specific areas, but target selection is still computer controlled; the tanks seem to generally shoot at the closest target inside the field of fire.
Under computer control, the AI does not seem to understand concepts like target prioritization, firing from beyond the range of the enemy's weapons, utilizing terrain buffs, etc. The main disadvantage to manual control is that your vehicles will try to execute exactly the movement order given and it cannot be changed once you start the turn. Thus, about the only time when I may use the automatic modes is if a tank faces multiple threats in proximity that cannot all be targeted under manual control. This is more likely for vehicles such as the StuG III or Hetzer that do not have 360 degree fire coverage without turning the entire vehicle.
