And so... the story ends as unlucky as it started. I feel so sorry for Remilia in this one, ze. It went from cute teasing, to just plain cruel. Well, at least Mokou's got a powerful new friend, and Patchouli will have an eternal opponent.

oh, I'm pretty sure there's a continuation. We still need to see what happened with Koa and her new friends, and Komachi and Sanae. 'Sides, pretty sure Remilia can bribe her way in just like Sakuya did.

Keine has some very active imagination. Oh well, time to change history and give Flan some bluish hair, and give Mokou some family to look after

yeah I felt sorry for poor Remi haha. She's my favorite touhou char and Reimu was THERE when her mansion was destroyed! She could help Remi out a bit especially since Remi looks up to her in this. That's just plain mean.

Reimu you know you got no food anyway why NOT let them stay over you idiot! you live alone get no visitors and got a small free workforce willin to work and stay -3- I'd so do it.
(maybe she doesn't have room.....even then i'd try to make accomodations haha.)

Reimu knows a lot of sayings. Here's one:Inviting a vampire into your home renders you helpless against it.

uh, what? That doesn't make any sense, and Remilia can enter any place she wants. Didn't she visit Reimu after Embodiment? She also went into Eientei because she wanted to. And didn't she enter the castle of the Netherworld during Missing Power and Scarlet Weather?

You got it wrong. Inviting a vampire in lets them in. Not inviting them prevents them from entering. That's all.

But Gensokyo's vampires only match some of the usual weaknesses, and even if this weren't the case Reimu wouldn't know WESTERN vampire myths.

On that note I always enjoyed the fact the Scarlet Devil Mansion was in the middle of a lake when acordding to legend vampires can't cross moving water.

Remilia: Haha we've arrived in Gensoyko now to go out and suck some blood!
Sakuya: Umm Mistress we might have a slight problem...
    Remilia: Huh?
Sakuya: Well it would be easier to just show you

Says who? I was un aware of a "pond and lake exemption" to the vampire moving water problem.

A lake by necessity is feed by a moving source of water like a stream of spring. In fact many lakes have both an entering and exiting stream or river making the lake arguably simply a widened part of a greater river. Anyone that’s ever actually been to a lake can also tell you that it will have currents. Just sit on one in a boat and even without any wind you’ll drift because the water is flowing. (Since there ain’t no such thing as a perfectly flat section of the earth the water will always be flowing at least slowly in some direction or another.)

The only time water wouldn’t be moving in nature is if it’s in a mud puddle.

also so they can take a shower or travel between continents?

This is something often ignored, but if they can't cross moving water they shouldn't be able to do either. This mythology was you must recall largely invented in a time where the only known landmasses all had viaable land routes to them and the only way to clean yourself was a bathtub (which ought to still work for a modern vamp).

That said this myth should have presented a rather obvious question even to them. Namely could they could go out in the rain? (Another reason for Remi umbrella perhaps?) As should be clear allot of these older myths spread around weren't really thought out that well by the people making them. Since nothing was written down you could basically go "well I heard..." and make some shit up and if you convinced enough people to buy it and someone wrote it down a decade later it was suddenly a viable legend.

Which is why so many people pick and choose bits of folklore they want and ignore others. Hell that's probably what they did back then too.

You'd better tell the people in Crater Lake, Oregon that they have to change the name.

Since everybody is posting huge walls of text, though, I'll walk you through it: Akyuu says it takes about an hour to walk around the Misty Lake. Given an average walking speed of 80 meters per minute, this gives it a surface area of about 0.7 square miles. Crater Lake has a volume of 4.49 cubic miles, which means the Misty Lake could be 6 miles deep and still not take as much water to fill as an actual lake without an inlet.

The rule, if we're to take Dracula as an authoritative source, is that vampires must begin a journey across oceans (and potentially other bodies of water) at low or high tide, the only time when the water is (hypothetically) not moving.

I've never seen it come up in Western fiction, but the Japanese seem to agree that rain meets the 'flowing water' criterion. (Note Flan being hurt by the rain in #post 471066.)

    True true

but then it looks like just touching a moving water hurts them

So they dont have blood since blood contains water and its flowing

Mhh they cannot cross moving water... but what about the rain i mean ok it hurts flandre but she is "crossing" moving water
Cant i pull her across the rive? what about flying over i mean you cannot cross moving water
above? underground? directions? its relative to the perspective
Cant get near moving water? mhh

The best theory is that they cannot get near moving water or it will hurt/kill them
Touching it damages the body therefore getting soaked in a river will make you die
Now i wonder at what point you can think of it as moving water
Travels from 1 place to another? but in the end all the oceans are connected creating just a big block of water stuck in the end

And here we finally see why legends and myths must not be scientifically analized.
They turn out to be inconsistent and impossible.

    Weird, no?

That applies to anything over time meanings change through culture language or any means that something is communicated hence myths and legends. But you know the old saying "you can't have smoke without fire"

I think there'd be a problem with a vampire moving THROUGH moving water, yet not flying over it.

OK... First off, Touhou doesn't stay true to the original Vampire mythos very much, and for a very good reason: Vampires originally had weaksauce weaknesses because they were meant to be tremendously powerful compared to their opponents, and those weaknesses gave the heroes their only chance to defeat their superpowered antagonists. Touhou passes out world-bending superpowers like party favors. Flandre's superpower has basically nothing at all to do with her vampirism, and Remilia uses magical augmentation and her spear, as well. ZUN needed to water down the weaknesses just to make it fair for the vampires.

The "moving water" weakness is actually addressed by ZUN. The original moving water weakness had to do with "purity", since water was associated with "life" and "cleansing", and hence would destroy vampires, which was considered something like a disease or poison. Hence, fresh water would be anathema to the corrupted vampire. Stagnant water would be just fine by a vampire, however, so it's really about how pure the water is. Also, vampires can cross bodies of water, provided they are in their coffins the whole time, and they are simply letting their minions take them across the sea.

For Touhou vampires, ZUN amusingly inverts this - vampires are actually weak to microbes in water (greatest threat - Yamame?!), so they can fly over bodies of water with impunity, so long sa they don't touch down in it, and they can probably bathe, so long as they put soap in the water to kill any possible germs beforehand (extrapolation there on my part), but rain will make them sick and weak, which is why Remilia was so upset about it starting to rain.

It's also worth noting that ZUN even watered down vampire's most notable weakness - the Scarlets aren't injured by sunlight, they simply lose strength. After all, Flan was out there kicking Kaguya's bitchy ass in broad daylight. ZUN also made the vampires fit in more with general Japanese mythology by making them powered by the moon, the way that other youkai are.

To argue with these month old debates, ever think about Sakuya's power over time? In theory, if she stops time, the water is no longer moving. This would allow crossing of "moving water".

I'm gonna take the high road and say vampires have a psychological disorder instead of a physiological vulnerability. PSYCH 101 finally paid off.

Sterilizing water is easy. There are numerous methods aside from simply filling a tub with filtered water. Hell, sticking coins (I forget if its silver coins or copper ones) in water makes the water bacteriostatic(sp?). I also seem to recall ZUN mentioning somewhere that whenever Flan gets worked up and refuses to stay in the basement they magically conjure up some rain to keep her confined to the mansion until she calms down.

That said, didn't that old vampire movie Nosferatu have Count Orlock traveling across the ocean by sleeping in his casket? Hellsing gave even the mighty Alucard the same weakness and Van Winkle trapped him on a ruined ship in the ocean. He countered by taking over the whole ship and using his power to make it move to take him back to shore.

I've also seen some fans give Remilia and Flan the Easten vampire weakness of fried beans (like oni).

As it is, Remilia and Flan are immune to crosses (Remilia thinks they are "cute"), sunlight only weakens them, running water is a weakness though how much of one is unconfirmed (does it weaken them severely or cause them pain), and if Remilia's lines in IaMP are to be taken literally instead of just a joke on her part, they don't cast reflections (it may have just been her being witty as she says this whenever someone fights a mirror match with Remi vs Remi).

It's silver. Just like mercury and lead, it kills microbes when submerged in water because the Ag+ ion forms bonds with oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen, generally important for the survival of microorganisms. Not only is it bacteriostatic, but also bactericidal.

Wrong. The heavy metal ions denature the proteins inside the organisms.

Remi should've avoided saying 'slacking off' and promised food. Oh, and by not being there while Sakuya asked if she and 'one or two others' stayed over - Hakurei Shrine already has a rep for being haunted by youkai without having a vampire live there.

But Remi has to be there doing it, as she's a proud vampire. And thus fail.
