Is Gavril turning into a statue? Does Oripathy just petrify you when it advances to a terminal stage?
It's worse. Oripathy doesn't 'petrify' you like medusa's gaze, it forms crystals that fuses into your tissue and grows. As it progresses the crystals will get bigger and bigger until they penetrate the skin and came out as the telltale lesions. These crystals are fragile and can be broken off (like told in Frostnova story: that the Yetis carry pendants made from Originium carved from her body to protect against subzero temperatures of her art), but if you do the surrounding tissue will bled profusely as the crystals are replacing the tissue as they expand. That also makes normal moving extremely painful, as explained in the recent Rainbow 6 crossover that oripathy 'medicine' was effectively only comprised of painkillers and antibiotics to prevent infection from pathogens entering through the external lesions. When it advances to terminal stage, the whole body would be covered in large amount of originum lesions that prevents the body from functioning (i.e internal bleeding from crystal shards breaking/puncturing internal organs, whole limb turned into stone like in Mephisto's case) and the body would finally break down into originum dust.

Jesus, that sounds absolutely horrifying...the fact that ANYONE in the Arknights world could deal with that kind of pain on a daily basis is pretty impressive on it's own, never mind the crazy magic powers.
It's basically Tiberium poisoning. Only quicker, and more volatile.
At least it doesn't turn you into formless flesh ameba—waitaminute.

You want more horror?
There's an actual real-life disease called Fibrodysplastia ossificans progressiva with very similar symptoms. The name is basically Latin fancyspeak for "BONES GRADUALLY GROWING IN YOUR FLESH".

Me : "Haha Warhammer 40 000's lore is silly, these Marines Malevolent have no chance in real life to ever get that kind of shit." Real life : "BUENOS DIAS FUCCBOI WANNA LEARN WHERE NIGHTMARES COME FROM?"

(Though obvi without the magic sci-fi stuff.)
Ah yeah, I forgot to include that disease. Arknights Oripathy has symptoms based on mixture of SIX different RL diseases:
1: Coal Lungs for the initial source of the outbreak. In Arknights they doesn't mine for Coal, but Originium crystals.
2: Asbestosis. This is even closer to how the Oripathy progresses, as RL Asbestosis also can cause...
3: Mesothelioma. If you read about the symptoms of Oripathy, it will include 'Originium Crystals formation on linings of internal organ', which is very similar to this disease.
4: Cancer, as Originium fuses with the Infected cells before 'breaking' microscopically and then spreads further to other tissue via bloodflow. Oripathy has 3 stages compared to Cancer's 4, but have similar measuring units: how much Originium have assimilated with the Infected's cells (Cell-Originium Assimilation) compared to how much lymph nodes has been affected for Cancer.
5: FoP. It's different in regard of one is autoimmune, non-transmittable disease and one is transmitted disease, but both has similarities in which FoP and Oripathy measures the lethality of the disease by antibody titer and and the density of Originium particles in every liter of the Infected's blood (Blood Originium-Crystal Density).
6: Yersinia Pestis/Black Death. Not really hard to see the connection here, people turn black as they're dying and became the new source of infection.
Also, it is still highly debated if Originium is really a mineral, or crystal-based lifeform as Catastrophes are the major factor of Originium spread through Terra, just like a massive migration event, and unprocessed Originium do have the characteristics of virus, i.e can hijack a cell and then proliferates.

I had no idea this was a real thing. Thank you for the nightmares, sir.
Also, does the armbands everyone in Arknights wear slow the spread of Oripathy or does it serve some other purpose? Cause some characters don't seem to have them like Lappland which, if the Armband serves the former purpose, means she's even crazier than I initially thought.

The 'armband' was Infection Monitors. It's a combination of vital signs monitor (blood pressure, heartbeat and pulse) but the primary function is to scan continously for the aforementioned Originium Blood-Crystal Density, as Operators would use their Arts in battles and that may cause the Oripathy to flare up.
On top of all the horrible pain and suffering they endure from the disease, they still have to suffer persecution, and in the case of some nations like Ursus, outright lynch mobs trying to murder them for something no one has any control over.

Originium slugs are creatures that live symbiotically with originium, it forms their shells. People/creatures don't become originium slugs from originium infection.
