    In fact, the 244th Fighter Group, which used the Ki-61 and Ki-100, claimed a total of 100 kills of all enemy aircraft, including the B-29, up to Feb. 20, 1945. The newspapers exaggerated this in propaganda articles at the time. The comment about shooting down 12 F6Fs in one mission was a reference to an air battle that took place over Hachinohe on July 25, 1945. Today it has been confirmed that the actual losses were just two planes each for the Japanese and the Americans.

    There was, and has always been, frequent overestimations of planes shot down for all 20th century wars.
