Reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd ask for donation money for Unicef as we trick or treated. So I think it's perfectly acceptable practice for Reimu. It IS for a good cause *snicker*.

Looking at the second panel, the kids never planned to carry out any trick, and they are asking for just candy. Reimu, on the other hand, is directly asking for enough money to fill her entire donation box. Refusal would lead to... you only have to look at her bubbles to get a hint.

Is it any wonder? Youkai grow in number by the day. If not for the outside world providing fresh victims on a daily basis, the human village(s) would be destroyed. Really, the complete destruction of Gensokyo and all of it's inhabitants would be a boon to humanity.

Doesn't change the fact that nearly every character and practically every deneizen in Gensokyo kills and eats people. From a human standpoint, killing all Youkai is a very desirable thing. To a youkai, coexistence means only killing and eating a human when they're hungry or threatened, no different from any other predator and humans hunt down and kill whatever preys upon them.
Humans in Gensokyo are hardly any different from livestock, penned in their little villages, unable to leave. And if I understand correctly, it's rather disappointing considering how pretty much all humans living there are descended from badass youkai hunters that sealed Gensokyo in the first place.
If they had the means, wiping the youkai out would only be the right thing to do. No doubts about it.
And thusly did SERIOUS BUSINESS befoul the merry kingdom of Life of Maid and in its wake did flow much flaming and idiocy, and the masses wept for the death of common sense it foretold…

I can think of some humans I wouldn't mind seeing get eaten by youkai such as vampires and kappa. Such as religious conservatives that do crap like have 18 kids when the world is already over crowded or a--holes who push nanny state laws.
You're the one that called me a racist, simply because I stated some facts from the canon. Nevermind how silly it is to say it's racist to want to remove a natural predator from one's domain.
Not to say that most fanon isn't enjoyable, but to the casual observer, one would hardly recognize the actual gensokyo when compared to the one fans like to run with. The differences can be quite staggering, even for a parody.
In Gensokyo nothing is serious business - and that's why we love its wackiness, be it man-devouring youkai, corrupt mikos, witch burglars, maids with the power of WRYYYYY, vampires on a diet, or any other kind of strange shit.
It's becoming obvious that some are becoming way too SERIOUS BUSINESS. Robert3186 was right - this is the "cancer" that's killing my appetite for reading the wackiness that is "Life of Maid".
On a (Slightly) related note, Halloween AKA All Hallows Eve is supposed to be a night where goblins, ghosts, and monsters can walk among normal people; in return for getting candy when they ask for it, they must behave and not harm/trick/eat humans.
At least that is how the legend goes.
And in response to unicode; Reimu is just trying to be scary, and 'cash in' on the whole Halloween situation. She is just being a little more successful about the former...

I don't know your definition of 妖怪 (Youkai) but dictionaries are quite clear. They are only unexplainable apparitions generally associated to imaginary monsters and such... (大辞泉 → 「人の理解を超えた不思議な現象や不気味な物体。想像上の天狗(てんぐ)・一つ目小僧・河童(かっぱ)など。化け物。」) So the whole killing and serial murder thing is not required for a 妖怪. And if they want to, Raymoo is here to keep it safe. The money problem is, IMHO, kinda related to the lack of donators, the reconstruction of the temple and the fact that Kanako, before the temple destruction, attracted a lot of fellows to her temple. Or maybe Reimu is just greedy as hell and knows no bound to extortion. Remember that she extorted money to Yuyuko during the Beach arc.
Reimu's poverty could be attributed to multiple factors (distrust from humans, reconstructions, etc.; extortion only happens when she snaps), but it could be mostly blamed on her easygoing personality - she only gets serious when needed, otherwise she's mostly found sleeping, chatting with Marisa, or keeping Suika in check. Also, Reimu has LOTS of youkai friends, and obviously not all youkai she once fought had genuinely "villainous" intentions. Really, when you only have one peacemaker in Gensokyo, you'd have to make do with an eternally poor miko.:P

Actually, in CoLA it is explained that there is a balance between youkai and humans in gensokyo that is being maintained, the humans don't go killing youkai, and there aren't many youkai slaughtering humans, and the growth of youkai is stunted due to other things like burning the bodies of the deceased etc. and im not sure but the humans were the ones that sealed gensokyo, damn all this time i thought it was Yukari who created the border.

Yukari helped in it's forming, but it was the Hakurei's and other priests that primarily created it. the fact that she has the power to tear it down completely in one stroke usually leads to people assuming she created it, too (I did early on)

The balance is that humans from the outside are attacked and killed instead, while humans in Gensokyo stay in their pen, lest they encounter and be eaten by youkai.
Actually, Gensokyo WAS largely inhospitable, fit only for youkai, so the mere presence of humans opens the possibility that many of which may have descended from the same humans who sealed Gensokyo off in Meiji 17/AD 1884, among which is Reimu's ancestor. Yukari can open segments of (or even destroy) the border, but otherwise she's a lazy bum who leaves her work to either her shikigami Ran and her own shikigami Chen, or to Reimu and her harem... er, cadre. And zpozi is right, one needn't be man-eating to become a youkai (itself a generic term for Japanese supernatural creatures), otherwise Reimu and Marisa wouldn't befriend youkai and even fight alongside them. Youkai could range from the malevolent oni to the mischievous kitsune to the ambivalent yuki-onna and the benevolent tengu.
As stupid as this already gets, canon does mention that some youkai eat people. It also mentions that evaluation of youkai should be made on case-by-case basis. Said canon also varies in style and substance enough to be from two different worlds in different games and comics, can be interpreted in many different ways depending on how one wants to. And I don't think ZUN is very concerned with what he writes anyway.
IF youkai existed, in gensokyo or otherwise, the right thing to do would be to consider them in the same way as humans are considered, by mature people. Many humans are pretty evil and selfish, and while rarely eat, often kill other people, torture, rape, etc. We don't still lump our kind together as one evil entity you should terminate. If youkai saw humans in that manner, we'd probably disagree.
Also, as per canon says, Reimu is pretty damn unlikable a character, mean, harsh, selfish, cold, aloof. She doesn't come across as very human herself. No canon says she cares anything about any youkai, or very much about any humans. If she was real, I wouldn't personally want to have anything to do with her.
Well, not really. If we're to believe Akyu, Reimu is more on the neutral side (but not cold), neither gentle nor strict, treating anyone equally. She's dedicated when it comes to youkai hunting, but is ironically highly popular with high-level youkai. But this is a 4koma, and here canon is screwed. Gotta love how Reimu tries to find ways to keep her funds rolling.:P

We have only a few youkai who have stated that they wish to eat humans (Rumia, Mystia, etc.), and all of them are nimrods or near harmless because of their incompetence(Rumia is so stupid she blinds herself and Mystia not only is illiterate, but she also runs a stall selling food to humans, but never eats them, so she's either too dumb to realize her prey is right in front of her or her threatening to eat people is a bluff, "talking big" is something she's infamous for).
The only one I can recall off the top of my head who threatened to eat a person and was actually dangerous was Utsuho and she's arguably dumber than Cirno and rarely leaves the Underground (a place even the surface youkai avoid)!
None of Byakuren's crew threatens to eat people. Most of the IN, PCB, PoFV, MoF, SA and SWR cast do not eat people or even threaten to do so (you can find one self-proclaimed huma-eater in IN and that's Mystia whose threats have already been all but debunked; Chen attacks people, but no mention of her eating them, so nobody in PCB eats humans; nobody in PoFV eats people though Medicine hates all humans; nobody in MoF eats people; Utsuho is the only example I can think of in SA; and Tenshi, Iku, and Suika do not eat people). Even in EoSD, Remilia never drains enough blood to kill people, and, contrary to her popular "psycho-monster-loli" portrayal, Flandre doesn't even realize vampires drink blood (her supply blood is mixed into her normal food), and Rumia is a complete and total dumbass!
That's it. Out of all the Windows games we have three people who have threatened to eat humans, one of which clearly doesn't even though she has had plenty of opportunity to do so, one of whom is a total moron (making her near harmless during the day as you can see her darkness bubble coming from way off), and the other of whom sticks to a place where humans never go and is herself fairly stupid concerning anything not connected to nuclear physics.
I'm sure there are still youkai who eat people, but they aren't the majority (hell, if the majority ate people thewre would be no Human Village as youkai outnumber the humans in Gensokyo), not even a significant enough number of them to be a huge issue any more (otherwise they wouldn't even consider letting youkai into the human village)!
