But... You don't open chips like that, you open it LENGTHWISE by ripping down the middle seam.
That only works if the bag is designed in a way that allows that, I have several bags of chips in my house right now that can't be opened that way. Also I've never in my entire life seen anyone open a bag of chips that way. Even if it were one you could open by tearing, you wouldn't tear it down the middle, that's ridiculous, you would tear one of the corners.

Wait, literally why? Opening the bag on the ends will mean you won't be able to reach the chips without dirtying your hand by reaching in unless you crinkle the bag bottom up. Meaning opening it lengthwise means you can pretty much eat everything easily. Also, there's a way to do this without even using the middle seam.
Maybe related, but in here almost all of our bags (bread, chips, snacks) comes with zig-zag cut marks on the ends, meaning they're the easy-tear kind.

Or you could just dump them into a bowl or something? Unless it's a small bag I actually intend to eat in one sitting, I would rather not destroy the entire bag to open it.
Also, America has a fascination with making all of our packaging as frustrating to open as a possible. Even shit that actually has the "easy tear" design ends up requiring scissors to open half of the time.
