Well for starters, diamond isn't even an element. Diamond is extremely hard but it's also brittle. Once sufficient force is given it will shatter to pieces. Steel is malleable, so when it's struck it only bends.

Diamond is however an allotrope of carbon, which is an element. But your point about fragility stands. Quartz is really more resistant to shattering because the bonds between the silica tetrahedrons are so strong.

I think in the end, its a toss up on whether you want something weaker but flexable, or stronger but prone to shatter. IMO, i'd still go for the hardest diamonds i could find.

Which I am saying is a bad idea since once they shatter they will be a bitch to clean up from your body, and second will most likely shred your organs with the shards.

If you want to modify your bones that badly try carbon-fiber.
