Oh Darwin. You had a time of it.

    EDIT:
okay it's a divisive issue and I didnt notice a lot of the comments til tonight. To avoid conflict on here, i'd rather you didnt get into personal ideas in the comments, there's plenty of places you can go to deal with these things.

Technically, the stuff that happens in Pokémon isn't evolution, so much as a sudden mutation or maturation caused by anything from extreme training to an increase in something in their bodies caused by happiness or an external stimulus (eg stones, being transferred from one trainer to another via electricity)

Probably would have been better if in the last frame he was just silent with a tremendous frown.

technically what pokemon do is metamorphosis, not evolution. Though I guess "Priplup is metamorphosing!" Doesn't have the same ring.

When my hush class was discussing about Social Darwinism being applied to the theory of evolution in a laissez-faire economy, I asked my teacher about pokemon. I said if the Charles Darwin was still alive, could he sue the pokemon industry? My teacher said pokemon was out of her generation... :l oh and the entire class moaned and groaned LOL

Technically speaking, considering how raising works, you could say what pokemons do actually IS evolution, only Lamark's theory of evolution rather than Darwin's.

My then seven years old niece saw that I had a Darwin plushie (it's adorable) and asked me who it was. "Oh, that's Darwin. He was a scientist who came up with smart things like evolution and stuff".
She contemplated this, and then asked "You mean like pokémon?"

Considering that all pokemon 'evolve' into the exact same variant at about the same time, it's not so much a mutation as metamorphosis like those seen in frogs or insect larvae. A biological process triggered either by age or by exposure to environmental stimuli i.e. evolution prompted by stones.

Pokemon are in fact biologically fascinating. Despite their massive variation in in size, ability, survivability in environments, and intellect, they are in fact all members of the exact same species. Legendaries excluded obviously. An organism that spans that gigantic field of types is actually something that is not observed at all in nature, and the genetic structure of such an organism would be fascinating. The gestation, biological fertilization, and metamorphosis phase of such a species would be an endless bounty of scientific and medical knowledge. It would be truly incredible what the scientists, zoologists of the pokemon world could achieve if they focused on zoological research into the fascinating pokemon species instead of wasting their time confirming the sex of 10 year old children.
