I don't think anyone's following this because of the art. It's definitely proof storytelling can overcome visuals.

The story got pretty generic by now, the art sucks massive balls and even the storytelling isn't anything special. People follow this because it's Touhou fanon that actually gets translated, which is clearly enough.
