I was thinking that too when I saw what the b&w protagonist.
Hm... I disagree because they don't have blond hair. In Japanese anime culture, you are not Caucasian unless you have blond hair. (but that doesn't necessarily mean you're Caucasian if you have blond hair).

And your not black unless you have big lips. Ok, admittenly, Japan has gotten better with their potrayal of black people(Think back on Dragonball). As for blond hair, i myself actually thought of it more like a French archtype if anything. It must be with how we're raised.
Japan is still giving chinese characters very slanted eyes though.
Well After contemplating this, I came to one conclusion. Did the pokemon community shift their target audience? (Of course the world is a potential audience but...) You know, 8-11 back then and now 12-15? Just the female protagonists' sex appeal seems to stand out. Among other details bla bla
