Shampoo is supposed to be Lum with the Jerkass turned up to 11, so there's that.

True but with Lums flying and electric powers it would have been awesome to see how Ranma's martial arts skills would have compared (especially during tag race at the beginning)

Problem is, Lum actually was something of a jerkass, especially in the earlier chapters of Urusei Yatsura. She just became so darn popular that she ended up becoming the main female lead by default. That's why Takahashi did her darnedest to make Shampoo unlikeable in Ranma 1/2 (not that it mattered, given Akane herself is also pretty darn unlikeable).

As much as I think it makes for an amusing mental image... Lum really doesn't measure up to the Ranma 1/2 martial artists. Even end-of-the-manga Akane could probably mop the floor with her if Lum got too close. Lum's race was dangerous because of their tech, not their individual fighting prowess.
