    Context:
Years ago someone proposed to his girlfriend by hiding the ring in a copy of "The Fault in Our Stars".
Many people were not happy about the destruction of the book.

If she cares more about material things rather than the sentimental ones, it's not there. You don't need a Kardashian in your life. Best test ever.

The book is also of sentimental values.
And it's not the book that is the problem. It's the act of destruction of something the woman clearly holds dear that is the problem.
If you are proposed to by the destruction of something you value, would you really consider the other party worth spending your life with?

For both cases I will quote the source that reads:

Update: The creator of this proposal informed us that they did not ruin the original book in order to propose! They bought a second copy, and their significant other was elated! We are happy they shared that special moment.

You can buy another book, you can't buy another husband. I would also choose a better page so "cancer" is not encircled by the ring for a marry proposal.

That's not a problem because none of that is what happened. The guy bought a second book.

Also, another remark mentioned by people is that the ring looks like a circle bringing attention to a quite unfortunate word.
Which is a double whammy if you are familiar with the plot of "The Fault in Our Stars"

Whether or not that was done on purpose (given that they should be familiar with the story) isn't known.

Great on him. He is not one to do things thoughlessly, I suppose.
Still, that's going to be bad for the woman's heart at first.

I wonder if they keep the book as a memento.

There are 8 billion people in the world, about half of them are men. There are in fact other fish in the sea.
