Hanna Rudel = Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a decorated German WW2 pilot who provided input on the design of the development project that yielded the A-10. Not sure about Dominica, and there doesn't seem to be a 74th JSW in the Third Air Force? Actually, I'm not sure about a few things here, so extra eyes would be appreciated.

    Strike Witches 1991 #7

Heavily armored against anti-aircraft fire and sporting a 30mm gatling gun in the nose, it's the A-10, a true hero's machine! This is the "Schwarz" wing, a joint unit comprised of members of the United States of Liberion Air Force and the Federal Republic of Karlsland Air Force. Front: MSgt Judith "Reaper" Rudel (age 13), a descendent of Col Hanna Rudel (retired). But her score and skill are no match. Back: Lt. Dominica "Tinklehog" Rand (age 17), a record holder in Liberion Air Force marksmanship competitions. She has awakened to the world of the siscon thanks to Judith.

The A-10 is "affectionately" referred to as a plane that was built around a gun. The nose gatling on the A-10 is a pretty notorious weapon for anti-tank strafing. I'd honestly be disappointed if the artist hadn't referenced it somehow.

The marking on the A-10 looks like Bundeswehr Luftwaffe marking, so JSW (probably stands for Joint Fighter Wing) is probably an international unit, so it would not be base on any actual US Air Force unit.

Ahh, the GAU Avenger. Urban legend has it that they have to stagger-fire it or else it'll cause so much recoil the engines could stall. While I don't think it's true, it's not all that far from the truth. The thing's the size of a small car, and typically fires depleted uranium rounds. It is to tanks what a steamroller is to puppies.

No no. The ammo drum is the size of a small car. The whole thing is the size of a semi.

While yes it's true that the recoil from that thing is crazy, it's more to save the ammo because it would blow through it extremely fast. The engines however are modified due to the fact that the gun exhaust does pass through the intakes, though I forgot the specifics.

The GAU8 is also inclined so that when the gun actually fires the pressure of the firing will revert the barrel position to what would be the straightforward position.

Watch out Neuroi, bullets that can rip through tanks without any other magical modification.

Now imagine what they do WITH magical modification.

Well if we look at the amount of damage that Lynne does to Neuroi (read: A LOT) using just 13.9mm rounds with magical amplification. . .

Remember this is also with a bolt action.

We can probably expect that the GAU-8 firing 30mm shells at 70 rounds per second would just tear any Neuroi apart in half a second.

Course what the witch is holding in this picture isn't a GAU-8. Looks more like a an M134. I'm somewhat disappointed with that though, since the GAU-8 is pretty much what defines the A-10.

Oh hush. A full-sized GAU-8 would look ridiculous hanging off her, especially considering that it would be more than twice as large as her and her Striker Unit combined.

Hmm, the closest I can look at the 74th JSW would be the 74th Fighter Wing from Georgia. You know, the Flying Tigers? That's where it could've come from.

Obviously Gertrunde Barkhorn's granddaughter would have to be the one to actually carry the 'fully armed' A-10 Striker... After all, if Grams can carry a 50mm semi-auto, four 30mm semi-autos, and all the ammo, what's a 'measly' 30mm gatling?

Just as an FYI for anyone who hasn't seen it: I'm refering to the 'Jet Striker' episode from season two of Strike Witches. At one point in the episode, Barkhorn, flying a Messerscharf-262 Striker, actually does carry all the hardware I mentioned.

Which was fucking badass. The only problem is mounting the ammo drum.

that and the fact the recoil really does slow the plane down. My source of info is my youngest uncle who flown a-10's on anti-armor support missions.

Maybe they can build a hammerspace ammo canister just for the occasion. Still the M134 spits out at 4000 or so rpm. That's still gotta hurt.

And 1 of the 30mm cannon shells being the size of a beer bottle
