The design is cool looking, the artstyle looks like going back to the 90s scifi anime, also this artist seem to have a lot of recognition, idk how Tanaka manage to hire someone like him but im just surprised he gave this one the job of drawing Lexington instead of Yoshinori, i mean what is this? Azur Lane?
I will admit that I definitely took a double take. But then when I realize who the artist was I can fully understand the choice.
The best explanation I can give to this is that Tanaka has been a big fan of various mangas and anime from the 70"s - 90's. And to see that he successfully made connections to hook up an artist that is iconic from this era (who has been responsible for many different anime and manga franchises from that era) I can fully understand why he was assigned to make a ship girl.
Why he was chosen to do Lexington I do not know but regardless anyone who's a fan of retro anime from the '80s and '90s will probably enjoy this.
You know what? A side-by-side comparison with Saratoga shows that they are wearing basically the same uniform. Maybe the off-putting look is just an artifact of the art style like how fanartists can easily get Murakumo to fit in with her sisters. At least the Lexington-class don't look as different as the Yamato-class and those girls are awesome.
Personally, I hope the Blue Ghost is Souya levels of generic.
I don't know, I understand people's frustrations with this style, but I really do like it. At first glance it was a bit of a shock, but honestly, her equipment is very detailed and just in general her design doesn't look half bad, just a little bit old.

It will take some time to sink in and get used to it. And tbh, many people expect her to be done by Yoshinori. It is KC custom to have one artists responsible for the sisters of the same class.
As for me, I like 90s art style but I hope they fix her eyes and mouth, and maybe her color palette.
But...yeah, I will soon love her, one way or another.
I'm surprised and impressed that this artist has managed to keep their style to the present day; most artists still active from that time into the 2010s have had their style morph with the current times.

The old tricorn hat reference. I love it.
If you mean the thing on her head, that's shaped like a bicorn.
I'm currently repeatedly double taking internally ........ this is......just such a far departure from the rest of Kancolle in terms of style that I'm suffering whiplash. I'll be curious what the fanartists do because atleast currently I ...... do not think I like this take on Lexington (its only due to the artstyle I'm glad the uniform and some details are atleast similar).

And they say the shibafu drawing a certain CV was bad enough, so for some reason decided to go 90 style drawing because "why not". I don't think that will save anything or a in good way to appeal to new player base but making those who still playing feel older than my dead grandmother lol

Tanaka already said he choose him because is his favourite artist, thats why.
What's throwing me off is this looks kind of amateurish compared to what Michitaka usually draws. He's a really good artist, but this doesn't really look like the work of a really good artist.
At that time, Intrepid didn't fit US navy (just because potato = IJN) but this simply doesn't fit KC (ok different artist but there should be a limit to how far away from her sister they are allowed to go).

For one side, like cool, its a different approach from what we are used to, a new artist in the cast and all, i dont dislike her but im taking it with a generous grain of salt and from the other side, compared to what we have, its a really different design and for me it doesnt quite have a good fitting compared to the more modern/clean anime style we are used to, heck even the older design from 2013 doesnt compare to it.
But now hear me out, the right shoe isnt coloured, so im going to vote for that it is a leaked concept art of some kind and will have a fixing and now conspiracy theory: Repeating the same history of Intrepid so people speak about Kancolle and make themselves notice more
Yeah, I don't think I'll ever get used to this art style... Another issue for me is the comically long tie. If it wasn't for that, her uniform would be closer to what Saratoga Mk.II is wearing, maybe.
That being said, this is probably the kind of whiplash we're being prepared for if Shinano wasn't drawn by Shizuma, but her old artist instead.

The real problem is that the little piece of equipment in that foot is still perfectly colored, which just looks like a mistake
Hey, at least Lex's fairy form doesn't look that bad, and they seems to share the same uniform and it compliments Sara's red pattern with Lex's blue-ish pattern.
What bothers me the most is the color palette. Most of KC's coloring is relatively subdued, like a bright pastel, so this neon doesn't feel right at all.
I also wish she looked more like Saratoga. At the very least, give her a smokestack hair ornament.
And finally, the rigging. Earlier American Carrier Kanmusu have relatively simple rigging: a gun, a flight deck, and an island superstructure. This is too much.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that other shipgirl game yet, because it has a bad habit of giving their shipgirls huge rigging with random ship cannons attached, and I think this is a closer example of that game's art than Scamp or Drum being fanservicey.
Honestly, wasn’t expecting the pink hair. I also think it’s interesting how she has an actual flight deck instead of a weapon analogy (such as a rifle or a bow). While I personally think that the artist might have been rushed in the execution, regardless of quality, their creativeness is amazing.

In other words this art was made to please one person and not actually keep continuity for the design of the series.
Apparently the artist felt threatened enough from twitter users that he got in contact with the police.😭 I'll never understand why people go after the artists like this, in the end it's the game's management that seeks out the artist, and gives the okay if the art is good enough to be in the game or not. Considering he's an industry veteran and 60+ years old I feel especially bad. Personally I like the design, the rigging in the damaged art is especially cool, it really looks like a damaged machine from an old school mecha anime. I know some people don't like it because they think it doesn't really fit with the rest of the games overall style, but I find it really cool when games have characters with radically different artstyles. FGO and Xenoblade 2 come to mind (this artist also did work for XB2 funnily enough).
But are apparently mostly Chinese fans.. now why would they write it in English?
well as a Chinese i would say fellow Chinese (mainland/simplified) people mainly head on twitter either to check on hentai, or to assault others for various reasons (mainly politic) spamming with hate is something hardly missing when controversies like this happen... and using different language make them visible to people of different language background indeed
People still discussing about the design, huh? I'm gonna join in and dump my two cents. I'm fine with the design of the rigging. The color palette is bit different from the rest of KC cast and it will just take some time to get used to. Nothing wrong with it. The style used for the face imo doesn't fit. But hey, it's for official art and we will all only see it in just official arts. It's not every single piece of pic of her will be drawn like this. What we will mostly see is fan arts, drawn by fan artists that will draw her in their own style.
What bothers me the most is that headgear of hers. That two stupid round thing jutting out of her head. If an artist draw her in all her kit, that headgear will be there. It's distracting and taking my attention away to that balance on her head. Like an I beam dropped on her head and bents downward after falling on top of her head like a slapstick joke in Tom & Jerry.

At least her voice sounds nice, it really has that refined old lady feel perfect for her nickname "Lady Lex". And she also mentioned Yorkie... I'm a bit concerned. Please Tanaka, don't fuck this up.
I told a friend of mine about this whole controversy, including the artist getting death threats. Then I showed him the art in question. He was not left with the impression that the response was reasonable.

The sad thing is that even though the response is not reasonable, most people (I hope) could've foresee this potential backlash when they see the art and compare it with Saratoga's. It's entirely avoidable just by playing it safe and have Asamiya draw some sort of congratulatory art instead.
It's a shame things got so bad and now the artist has to avoid socmed and protect his tweets.
Apart from the sub-par quality of the figure even by the artist's own standard, the design of the rigging is completely messed up with multiple errors. Yet the management (presumably Tanaka himself) chose not to make any further revisions and directly posted it. When players tried to complain under the official Twitter account, they were immediately blocked. Then they turned to the artist with greater anger. Only after the artist was forced to leave Twitter did the management jump out and say, "Oh no you can't do this to our Precious Legend blahblahblah". I've never seen such a disastrous QC and PR stunt. Tanaka is such a coward and loser.

After seeing her performance in pre-war exercises, I will say that anything less than radiating absolute senpai energy is unacceptable. She wrote the book on carrier warfare from creating the Midway strategy in 1930 to her innovations in escort formations to her numerous simulated raids on Pearl Harbor. (Turns out the Americans weren't the only ones reading that book) Even her death led to a massive innovation in carrier warfare that saved thousands of American lives: how not to flood your hangar with AvGas fumes.

This is such a disingenuous take.
Would the playerbase now condemn Murakumo, Shouhou and Hatsuharu for not looking like the rest of their sister ships?
Kancolle had diverse art styles since the beginning, and not all of the shipgirls have 100% historically accurate riggings. It's just that the playerbase has become too conditioned to seeing Konishi, Yoshinori and Shibafu's art that they believe that only they should be Kancolle's artists and nobody else. This is pretty evident everytime a new artist gets added to Kancolle's roster. Zeco and Acea4 got massive backlash when they got their first shipgirl designs added to the game, and this is no different, only this time people hated it because it's an old art style that isn't used anymore, and people brought their microscopes and calipers to dissect the design just to justify their hate to it.
Would the playerbase now condemn Murakumo, Shouhou and Hatsuharu for not looking like the rest of their sister ships?
You're calling that a disingenous take with your own, even more disingenous take.
If they were released now, with their exact base art, and their sisters were released in Year 1 yes. People *would* condemn them.
People didn't throw shitfits when Hoshi Akari or Hozuka started doing art. People didn't care when Kiddy got Salmon. People didn't care about Umihara Sakana and her IJA ships. People didn't care about Sara's De Ruyter, or Watanabe Akio's Matsu-class.
But I bet you they would have done if Umihana Sakana's debut art had been for Wisconsin. Or if Watanabe Akio's debut had been Enterprise.
also 'Ooh I like the art style' still doesn't mean the art is *good*. There's lots of art from that era that I think looks just fine- and this really really does not.
Tanaka already said he choose him because is his favourite artist, thats why.
Reminds me of how the director for the animé of That Other Shipgirl Game™ was only chosen because the lead dev was a fan of his work, not because he'd be a good fit. The result was the lead character being turned from a noble heroine to an emo, self-destructive shut-in.
And yes, I already know I've commented about That Other Shipgirl Game™ here.
In the competition between carriers, we can't fall behind Shoukaku and Zuikaku. Now's the time to focus on aircraft maintenance. Right, Yorky? Yorky? Ah, I see. She hasn't woken up yet. Right...
Tbh i don't mind with 90s art style or anything. It just that kikuchi michitaka could have drawn better , especially after seeing his other works but he drawing lex is just , errrrrrrrrrr , not on par with other to be polite. Even Shibafu potatoes are better
Good news, Asamiya has returned the public in X/Twitter and he's gonna release Lexington's 1st Seasonal CG. This time he will draw her looks better than the original one.

i think it was the writer not the director of the anime.
