Leaving aside the fact that the artwork isn't even up to his usual standards, the art style quite simply just does not fit with the rest of the game. Kind of like how putting a white sci-fi laser gun in a WWII shooter just isn't kosher but Valkyria Chronicles can get away with all the shit it pulls.

It looks objectively worse than other things the artist has done, even as far back as the 80s, nevermind modern examples. It looks like something I could find on DA in the early 00s when those infamous How to Draw Manga books were trendy.

People really have trouble grasping that Valkyria Chronicles isn't trying to be a historical fiction. It's like if people thought Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was about the Crimean War because the starting country is called Crimea.

No, it's a World War 2-style setting with the addition of magic. Honestly, I probably would have used Dino D-Day instead but I was concerned that no one would recognize or even agree with the reference.

The art looks incomplete and bad. It looks like examples of peoples early artwork when they are still developing their skills or when people take shortcuts. The people at the company shoupd not have accepted it as a final piece.
