The instant Oryou mentioned her language is Portuguese, all the Brazilians came out of the woods. Too bad about the author asking help from a AI, likely the jp equivalent of ChatGPT tho. But I can only speculate that he knew too well about the infamous way people on twitter have been harassing Japanese people lately.

the last name is the real "throwing darts at the board" part though. between that and the "I asked a bot for popular girls names in such-and-such language and didn't check validity" part, it seems like a serious case of trying to deflect social media morons from the west. either way, I think the author said something to the effect that she's indigenous, so technically she wouldn't be .br either, even though she speaks .br portugese. part of me wants to follow the maoyuu principle and take "descriptor used as name" as a way out, since she'd be the only relevant character without the excuses being made... another part wants to hit the L/R swap and call her "ratina" just for a half-point of plausible deniability
and then the rest of me wants to ignore the entire debate and just drool because oryo has presented a deliciously hot girl, as usual.

Lets be fair, Araki named his Italians after food, Takahashi named all Chinese characters in Ranma after cosmetic product and in real life we got French girls named... France.

I've seen a lady named Taco Hernandez and another as Italy Custard. Makes ya wonder sometimes.

Should take some expectations of how down to Earth a series is trying to be. Ranma 1/2 for example never tried to be down to earth with Ranma and his Father having swam to China as part of their training, people fighting with a giant oversized okonomiyaki spatula, or having fighting styles like "Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics."
PSA for any writer reading this: There's a website called "Behindthename.com". It's a free resource documenting names from a plethora of languages and cultures, and is a great way to help a writer come up with believable names. They even have a random name generator.
