I'm gonna go off on a personal tangent here, sorry for bothering folks.
I love Azur Lane, I wanted to keep playing it and collecting those cute units. But a problem arose last year. I moved to Japan for work. And thus, my GPS location changed and Google Play wouldn't accept my payments unless I updated my country of residence. So I did. And then... Since Azur Lane Global is not available in Japan (I guess I'm supposed to play the JP version here), Google Play won't accept my payments for another reason.
And now, well, I have no more room for new units and can't insert money in the game to upgrade my docks. I'm pretty bummed out. This whole mechanic of gathering repeat units and needing to upgrade storage space feels archaic now, since new gacha models don't work like that.
All this to say... SorryZ9, you are very cute and would look lovely in my secretary roster, but I'm quitting Azur Lane for the forseable future. (Mind it, I'll be around Danbooru, so I'll probably stay up to date with the events and all...)

Azur Lane is VERY generous with free gems. Unless you spend them all on skins, Global F2Ps should have around 2k-4k from mail alone. JP server has even higher count since they have events every few months. Not to mention, you can farm gems in-game without buying them.

Farming gems in AL is extremely RNG based on several levels. The chance for a gem mission to appear is very low, and the amount is also very low.
Events that give gems are also kinda rare, most don't. I can only remeber Annyversaries and New Years giving gems, but I might be mistaken.
I'm doing some calculations here, but bear with me if I'm wrong about those.
When you start the game for the first time, the player is given a Dockyard with 150 slots, fitting 150 different units. I'm not sure how many units the game has at this moment and I don't have all units in my game. I'm sitting at 686 non repeated units, plus 36 bulins of the three kinds (should use or retire some of those, I think...)
My maximum dock space right now is 810.
Now, every 10 slots cost 200 gems. I bought 660 slots, wich means I spent 13200 gems on Dock space alone. So, 2000 to 4000 from mail alone (in a time frame you didn't specify) is not enough, but yes, it indeed helps. It's not like I paid for all the gems I spent, that's not the point.
I should also add that, for sanity reasons, I believe it's good to have a buffer space to fill with the map drops instead of having to stop every three missions to enhance and retire units and free up dock space. That is annoying.
But don't misunderstand me, I'm not blaming the game. The archaic mechanics can't be changed. Lots of games from back then used this mechanic of making the player stock up repeated units in a limited stock space to make them have to buy more space. Fire Emblem Heroes and Girls Frontline do the same, for example.
I was just griping about my personal woes of not having the means of investing my money on the game anymore, for reasons I can't change anytime soon.

I don't know if it work in japan but you can try downloading the game (Global or JP) from qooapp(get an older version of qooapp(the blue/white one) via apkpure website to avoid the age restriction on qooapp once you opened it and do not update the app, I suggest taking ver 8.4.x) and see if you can bypass the google's loaction restriction. I hope this can help.

I thought if your account was locked to wherever you were when you set it up, not where you currently are. Still, it sucks that Google has to be pricks about the whole thing.

It's a messy situation. So just now I decided to risk it and used a VPN to set back my region to South America. It SEEMS to have worked, but who knows if there will be repercussions...
Edit: It just rolled back to the first step of the problem, my country is back to the original, but I'm still unable to make purchases, because Google know my location via GPS, so VPN doesn't help in THIS part... Oh, well...
