absolutely love little spee's expression in first panel. like she knows that her bigger big sister is gonna morb in and morb all over the place, she's just too tired to feel embarrassed. and love Ethan developing the characters' personality more in this series. Deutschland's love for theatrics and singing her love and praises for her sisters and her favorite weaklings. truly the kindest bully.
also interesting to see Ethan continuing to portray the lillies and their originals as sisters rather than mothers and daughters or aunties and nieces, unlike most of the fandom and fan artists. an interesting narrative choice i guess.

Here's the pertinent dialog from the event where we got Akagi-chan, Zeppy, and Hiei-chan. It's that device that Akashi and Yuubari created that interacts with wisdom cubes, Bel-chan being the first. There's even a prior event before which explains where Bel-chan came from, but this one does a better job of it. For the sake of posterity, I'll include those lines here: -----------
Graf Zeppelin: In other words, your high-energy laser experiment went awry, and accidentally created these kids?
Hiei: Even though they share the same "history" as us, humanity's will often takes on different forms...
Akagi: In other words, they are us, but in a younger state?
Akashi: That is the best way to understand things, nya... It seems that Hiei-chan and Zeppy only have a portion of their "history," nya...
----------- (Akagi-chan isn't mentioned here because she's been out of the entire event until elder Akagi discovers her at the very end.)
So, canonically, they're immature duplicates minus the trauma of their war service. This is demonstrated by Graf Zeppelin through the line: --------------
Graf Zeppelin: Leave this one to me, then. Although our personalities are different, she's still me after all, so I won't treat her poorly.
----------
Every other event/addition regarding the smaller shipgirl variants dispensed with event dialog explaining why they showed up, so I went ahead and took it upon myself to explain their presence when I could. I didn't have much choice when Amagi-chan was announced. Talk about your pipe bombs. I had to make hard cutaway from my current storyline because if there was one child variant shipgirl that I had to address, it was Amagi-chan. For those of you twenty years from now reading this and scratching your heads why, it's because older Amagi is the single most revered shipgirl in the franchise. And she's Akagi and Kaga's older sister.
(Don't even think about WELL ACKYCHUALLYing me here. Kaga calls Akagi nee-san. She even recently suffered grievous wounds in an event to save both Akagi and Amagi. They're sisters.)
As for the daughter/niece thing, that's all fanon. So is everything in my comic, even though I try to stick as close to canon as possible but a lot of times there's nothing there like with the bulins. You'll see what I'm talking about in the next few upcoming comics.

Azur Lane's depiction of Akagi and Kaga 's sisterhood is certainly an intriguing one. They're most certainly related by blood, (figuratively, ofc), as the Amagis are "essentially a lengthened version of the Tosa-class" (quoting Wikipedia). Though the special bond between them is quite inseparable, as depicted in game. Kaga dedicated herself to Akagi so much that she sacrificed herself to fulfill Akagi's wish of brining Amagi back. I'd like to think the Tosas and Amagis as half-sisters, and the adopted/chosen family nature of the 1st CarDiv is what made their bond special. Notice how Kaga only ever call Akagi "nee-sama", but only refer to Amagi as "Amagi-san", despite showing great reverence to Amagi. In Ode of Everblooming Crimson, BB!Kaga, who don't have the memory of the 20 years spent in 1st CarDiv, do not use any kinship terms or honorific for either of the Amagis, and doubts if she will ever sacrifice herself for them as the present Kaga did. Amagi in the same conversation revealed that she knew she was dying all along, was not surprised when learning that Kaga became Akagi's younger sister in 20 years, only asking how Kaga died. And in a flashback in Whence Flowers Bear No Fruit, during Kaga's sacrifice, we see Amagi, before death, giving Kaga her amulet and asking Kaga to take care of her sister for her.
AL certainly has come a long way since its early days when the story element was negligible and some character lines had to be written by programmers. The fox family being portrayed as a chosen family is very good writing to flesh out the characterizations, and also why I love seeing them being depicted in fanarts and manga, so thank you for continuing their story.
(Also, TIL, Kaga was the older sister ship to Tosa in Japanese historiography. Was reading a STEED comic earlier today and wondering why Tosa was calling Kaga big sis and had to reread her Wikipedia page.)
