because having an ending like this wouldn't waste all the depression episodes 1-10 had been building up... I for one somewhat wanted an equally depressing ending before the series even ended. not that I hate the current ending nor do I not enjoy happy endings... but all that depression suddenly went to waste in my opinion.. XD

I actually don't mind this end.

So... you think the sad stuff that happened earlier wouldn't go to waste... if the series had some miserable ending where everyone was still dead save for Homura living out some horribly twisted and bittersweet dream? What? How does that work? For that matter, how does a happy ending make all the miserable stuff that happened before a waste? Have you never heard of the Trope "Earn Your Happy Ending"? I'd say Homura (and to an extent, Madoka) freakin' earned that bittersweet happy ending!

So knowing that Magical Girls don't need to eat, since their bodies aren't really living bodies, more like a doll, then this would mean Homura will live forever trapped inside a dream, reliving her encounters with Madoka for an eternity? Fate worst then death.

I wonder whether these artists consider their work as mere fanfiction or whether they believe in it so much that it becomes their own canon.

Well, when you consider the idea that there's an seemingly infinite number of travels that Homura makes, anything is possible. To the point where many fanworks are... plausible possibilities.

The soul gem still needs to take care of its host body. Since it can repair all kinds of wounds, I'd expect it to be able to deal with hunger/nutritional needs via the same magic. Since regeneration is magic and thus blackens the soul gem, providing for the body would also blacken the soul gem, though at a presumably much slower rate, not really taking into account the acid in your stomach eating at the lining which would require regeneration. Homura would eventually get witchitized, it'll just take a lot longer to do so.

This pool, I can't help but see similarities with the later Rebellion:
- Homura wanting to die in a way that avoids becoming a witch compared to Homura wanting to die within her Soul Gem to avoid Madoka's intervention.
- Madoka's wish going counter to Homura's intentions compared to Homura's ascension going counter to Madoka's.
- Homura's eternal sleep generating energy compared to Homura's entrapment keeping her in a near-witch state to draw in Madoka.
...and all that when there were still two episodes of the original series to go. Not very predictive of the show's course, but in-tune with the movies' continuation.
