Actually, this is a cultural Japanese reference. In Shinto, the god of the harvest was said to make food in such a way (and other fairly disgusting ways). Even though the food was clean and fresh, because it -looked- gross to see it performed, depending on the legend, either Tsukuyomi or Susanoo'o killed her for it, which caused them to get shunned.
