Marisa's pride was doomed the moment she foolishly tied her victory to that of the pride of weaker youkai everywhere. The moment she did that she guaranteed that not only did Reimu have to do her best to win, but that Reimu had to humiliate her in the process in order to prevent an prising of weakling youkai.

Only thing that would happen is that Reimu wouldn't be allowed to be lazy. Though knowing Reimu, I can understand how that's a big enough reason for her to crush the feelings and pride of the person that is supposed to be her best friend. What a great person Reimu is.
