The best-known of Ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai's โ36 Views of Mt. Fuji,โ this piece depicts a large wave cresting over fishing skiffs in a bay near Kanagawa, with Mount Fuji itself dwarfed by the wall of water and offered little contrast from the roiled skies above.
Because it has become an iconic representation of Japanese art, the motif is frequently used in modern works where it tends to impart a sort of "traditional" feel.
