    A small horizontal wedge (>) symbol directly above or below a musical note, indicating that an emphasis is placed on the note in question. A vertical wedge (∧) is referred to as marcato.

    This should not be confused with a diminuendo which is superficially similar in appearance but generally much longer and indicates a gradual decrease in volume.
