Dragon Ball Super Broly is the twentieth movie in the Dragon Ball franchise and the first to carry the Dragon Ball Super branding, as well as the third Dragon Ball film personally supervised by creator Toriyama Akira, following Battle of Gods (2013) and Resurrection 'F' (2015).
The film takes place after the Universe Survival Saga depicted in Dragon Ball Super. Under the tagline "the greatest enemy, Saiyan", the film depicts the fate of series protagonist Son Goku and Vegeta as they encounter a new Saiyan called Broly. The movie's prologue also adapts the spinoff Dragon Ball Minus, a retelling of Goku's origin, including the connection of the Frieza army and the history of the Saiyans.
This also marked the first time Broly was a film personally written by the series creator, thus making him canon in the Dragon Ball universe.
