Largely recognized as"Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)" is a surgical procedure performed on women that removes the clitoral hood from the vagina.
Certain African cultures provide circumcsion of both men and women as an optional rite of passage before marriage, as the foreskin and clitoris are seen as androgynous body parts belonging to the other gender. This is no longer practiced due to the international perception and health issues involved.
