fengguan

凤冠 鳳冠

A type of traditional Chinese headgear for women. It was worn mainly by noblewomen during the Ming Dynasty for ceremonies or official occasions; it is also worn by brides during weddings¹.

Fengguan means "phoenix crown", a name that originates from its adornments: phoenixes made of inlaid kingfisher feathers, as well as gold dragons, beaded pheasants, pearls and other gemstones. Sometimes they are adorned with decorative wings - called diyi - instead of beads.

Notes

¹ The are several different variations of the fengguan's design, so the design can vary greatly. Traditionally, the number of dragons, pheasants and phoenixes on the hat denoted the wearer's rank.
