Traditionally a foyer was a large, open lobby/reception area in public buildings such as theaters and hotels. The term has since evolved (especially in North America) to refer to the small landing by the front door of houses and apartments where one stores their keys, jackets, puts on their shoes, etc.

The Japanese version is a genkan (玄関; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genkan).
