Extremely popular in the West during the year 2000, where it was broadcast in the Toonami block of Cartoon Network and had many action figures released as well in several popular toy stores in the USA, a first for a Gundam show.
In real life the popular trope of a group of young Gundam pilots actually originated in the Gundam ZZ series that debuted a decade before Wing.
