joy (shenmue)
Joy is a supporting character in the Sega video game series Shenmue. She first appears in the 2001 sequel Shenmue 2, where she assists the protagonist Ryo Hazuki navigate his way through Hong Kong and Kowloon Walled City in search of his father's killer. She has a brash, generally positive personality and is often seen riding a motorcycle around the city. It is implied she has a romantic interest in Ryo, which is not reciprocated. Joy appears briefly in Shenmue 3 during a phone conversation cameo.
Joy has a prominent role in the 2022 anime adaptation Shenmue the Animation, where her backstory is further expanded on. It is revealed she is the daughter of a Hong Kong cartel leader. Her mother was killed by Shenmue 2 antagonist and rival crime lord Don Niu during an attack on her father's business, leading to estrangement from her father.
