leaf fan

葉扇子 芭蕉扇

A hand fan made out of leaves (or a single leaf).

Often depicted as a single palm or banana leaf repurposed for use as a fan. Tiny characters may instead use a fern leaf.

Another common variant is the "palm leaf fan", made from dried palm leaf ribs woven together (some are made from bamboo leaves, despite the name). These are shaped like uchiwa and often used in a similar manner (e.g. to stoke the flames of a grill).

Do not use this for hauchiwa, as those are made out of feathers despite some of them taking a leaf-like appearance.

Notable artifacts

  • Banshousen/Bajiao-shan ("Banana Leaf Fan")
    • Magical artifact usually depicted as a gilded banana leaf fan. Originated from Journey to the West, but makes frequent appearances in other copyrights.

Notable characters

  • Tie Shan Gongzhu (Journey to the West)
    • Original wielder of the Bajiao-shan.
  • Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball)
    • Sometimes depicted carrying the Banshousen.
  • Misato (Senran Kagura)
    • Wields a fan made out of multiple 'tanuki leaves' bound together at their petioles.
  • Kurama (Urusei Yatsura)
  • Shiftry (Pokemon)
    • Hands are leaf fans. Sometimes not depicted as 'fan-like', so avoid tagging leaf_fan for those cases.
  • Lilina (Fire Emblem)
    • Carries a miniature palm leaf fan (single leaf) in her "Beachside Bloom" summer skin.
  • Shameimaru Aya (Touhou)
    • CAREFUL! Often depicted with a hauchiwa that resembles a maple leaf. Do not tag those as leaf_fan. Tag hauchiwa instead.
    • Sometimes depicted with an actual maple leaf fan. Tag those as leaf_fan, not hauchiwa. If unsure, default to hauchiwa.

Tag usage notes

  • Tag fans made out of leaves (or a single leaf) with leaf_fan.
    • For single 'unmodified' leaves, avoid using leaf_fan if the character is just holding the leaf. Tag leaf_fan only if the character is actively using the leaf as a fan, or is holding it in a way suggestive of an intent to use it as a fan.
  • DO NOT tag hauchiwa with leaf_fan.
    • If unsure whether a fan is a hauchiwa or an actual leaf_fan, default to hauchiwa.
