The third of the Zara-class heavy cruisers of the Italian Regia Marina (Royal Navy) as depicted in Kantai Collection. She is named after Pula, Croatia, also known as Pola, which was part of Italy several times in its history, the last time from 1918 to 1947.
Character design by Jiji (Aardvark), voiced by Akasaki Chinatsu.
In-game, she is depicted as having gray wavy hair, grayish brown eyes, and thick eyebrows. She also wears a uniform similar to big sister Zara's. Pola wears a black bodice over a white shirt, a red miniskirt with anchors attached, white thighhighs and grey boots. Accessories include a red bowtie and a mini hat based on the appearance of the historical Pola's rangefinder. Her damaged portrait features her leaning topless on her gear with several articles of clothing removed (this refers to her demise, as explained below).
For a collaboration with Mitsukoshi with a promotional release of a new batch of Beaujolais Nouveau for the Fall 2016 Event (which also foreshadowed Commandant Teste's appearence in the same event), she is drawn wearing a white coat, a pink scarf, black pantyhose, black boots and black gloves along with a fur trim for her hat. She is sparkling while staring at the glass of wine she is holding, and carrying a Mitsukoshi bag. Her damaged portrait is simply her with the coat and scarf removed, empty glass in hand, no visible damage, revealing she had been wearing her usual clothes underneath.
For a collaboration with Lawson in July 2017, she was the one designated to wear the employee's uniform, her hair being tied into a ponytail for the occasion.
History and personality
The historical Pola was disabled by an aerial torpedo from HMS Formidable during the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941 and subsequently sunk through a magazine explosion after being torpedoed by HMS Nubian. Several of her men jumped overboard out of panic after the initial aerial torpedo, but they soon swam back on board after seeing that she didn't sink. The men then stripped themselves of their wet, freezing clothes and raided the ship's stash of wine to feel warm. As a result, they were found drunk and naked by the boarding party from HMS Jervis, with empty wine bottles littering Pola's deck. This is why several of shipgirl Pola's lines, as well as both official and fan art, depict her as somewhat drunk, sometimes naked, and at times with a wine bottle at least at hand's reach, making Zara worried for her sister's welfare. (Coincidentally, Pola's namesake town has a long history of winemaking.)
