war hammer

A late medieval melee weapon consisting of a long handle with a blunt-faced hammer head, often with a spike to pierce armor. It was designed to deliver heavy damage against well-armored opponents through sheer blunt force.

Real life war hammers range in size from not much bigger than a regular carpentry hammer, used by cavalry, to long polearms carried by infantry. This tag can also be applied to huge fantasy weapons depicted simply as an oversized hammer or sledgehammer.

Not to be confused with Warhammer 40k.
