Well, people will fear something they don't know, will be suspicious of those who are different, and will try to limit something they don't understand.. If you could see spirits and ghosts as a kid, you'll understand..

Some people say that seeing "fairies", alongside gaining otherworldly powers, are part of being chuunibyou.
And it's not looked upon favorably, I think.

Also, you should remember that Japanese culture is rife with schoolyard bullying. Not in the sense of "tease them for embarrassment" kind.

The "isolate them until they go mad" kind.

So, yeah, if you stand out a lot, you're prime target for mind-breaking. Because non-conformity is dangerous to the status quo.
