There's lots of different ones - but yeah, on the whole modern (as opposed to traditional) ones are pretty car seat-like. There are also ones that are more like regular wooden-backed chairs, but without legs.

You can get ones with arm-rests, lumbar support and even massage units. They're not just for kotatsu use, since some people use a low table all year round in their tatami room, just without the kotatsu part.

I suspect that Hiei wants the actual couch for herself.
