I see you poking around on military hardware posts enough that I don't believe you're unfamiliar with how fragile the overworked engines in the German heavy tanks were.

I'm not familiar, but at a glance at the information readily at hand says that these tanks were well known for breaking down due to serious engine fires. Later models added upgraded heat vents and coolant sub-systems to help solve the problems with the engine overheating and exploding the gas, and they were much more venerable machines by the end of the war.

Apparently, this was due to the engines initially being designed to be waterproof. I guess that little piece of technology was too ahead of its time.

Another is that they had little time to field test them and as soon it was "good" the trial and error is only seen in the battlefield itself.

Well Hitler wanted them for Operation Citadel so I can imagine testing time was cut

One of the reasons the Panther engines often caught fire wasn't so much a problem with the engine itself, as it was a problem with the quality of parts available. The Panther had a closed bottom engine compartment, which made it waterproof, but also meant that leaking gas had nowhere to go but to flood the floor of the engine compartment, eventually being set on fire by electric sparks or heat from the exhaust pipes. And leaking gas was a huge problem. The cause was poor quality gaskets used in the fuel injection system. The gaskets cracked and gas leaked out. Poor quality gaskets was also a major issue in the gearbox and the hydraulic system.

The sealed floor engine compartment had another major drawback: If you dropped a wrench or other tool during repairs and it fell down under the engine, you couldn't get it out, unless you lifted the entire engine out... There wasn't enough room to reach the tools by hand.
