A charming series. I don't understand why people were upset by the first episode. Most animated series have characters standing around with only their mouths moving 90% of the time. Any long running shonen series is going to be doing precisely this.
It had a nice grounded slice of life feel to it and an easy pace. Quirky characters, nice designs, and informative animal-related gags. Even a few action sequences and a mysterious alien enemy to keep things interesting.
The Friends are quite super human and demonstrate it with a fair amount of frequency.

IMO it mostly came from the 3D CG made quite a noticeable contrast with the background, hence making the unnaturalness stand out.
