I mean, the creator died, and other people tried to continue it for a long time. Unless Monty left incredibly detailed notes, that was always going to end in an eventual trainwreck.

Which is why it gets hilarious when the fans just comes up with these nonsense "It was planned all along!" Theories for everything that's has happened so far.

Ignoring the mental gymnastics they try and make you do you'll quickly notice nothing really seems like it was planned and more line stuff just happened and they just went with it or allowed the fans to make excuses for them.

IIRC Monty was mostly an animator though, wasn't he? While I haven't watched in years, from what I remember the plot was always kinda cobbled together, but at least in the early seasons it was carried by his great fight scenes.
