You'd think they'd give Ash a least one good 'W' every other season. Getting less than a handful of championships, but a bunch of top 10s in 25 years would get you pushed into retirement in many sport careers.

To be fair, he kinda did. The Orange Island League, the Battle Frontier, and the Alola League were his big wins prior to becoming the world champion. And aside from that he made top 4 in Sinnoh (losing to the eventual winner and still doing better against him than everyone else) and the finals for Kalos, so he was essentially number 2 for both of those. When you lay it out his records are actually very impressive.

Its especially egregious when you realize Drake (the Orange League Champion) was stated to have beaten Lance and was undefeated until Ash beat him! So Ash was technically better than two League Champions before they even got around to animating Johto!
I am amazed I have never seen a fanfic where he stays in the Orange Islands as their Champion or even just has to defend his title there. Everyone in the anime likes to pretend The Orange Islands never happened!

to be fair the orange island was made due to the need to tide folks over during the delays of what would eventually become gen 2 hell Lugia was a anime only creation that got ADDED into the games.
