Well, there was a scene in an earlier film that suggested a sword-fight would break out. Indy pulls out a gun and shoots him, since the actor didn't want to go through another fight scene, and the directors thought this was funnier.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark, the Cairo Swordsman scene. The main reason for the scene, was because Harrison Ford had Dysentry (SP?) at the time of filming the scene, which originally called for a long, drawn-out fight sequence. Ford, exhausted and sick after a day's shooting, just went "Fuck it", and shot him. They kept it in, because A) It was funny, and B) It was ENTIRELY within Indy's character to do something so pragmatic.

Props also goes to the stuntman playing the swordsman adlibbing the kill too. since I don't think anyone was actually expecting Ford to do that.
I can't stand by in silence and watch evil like yours!Fight me fair and square! It happened just the other day...They appeared in front of me... and took away the Philosopher's Stone.I'll say it straight; there was nothing I could do against them. Please pay attention over there. How did you notice?Mmh. The tail's so soft! But instead... I was able to learn of their plan with my ability.
