Should We Have a "Mixed Focus" tag?

Posted under General

Okay, this sounds weird, but hear me out.

As it stands right now, it is nigh impossible to search for images where there is equal emphasis on both a 1girl and 1boy in an image. As most of the site is female focus, such a tag is obviously useless, and we have male focus for posts that are male oriented...But searching for images where both have equal presence in an image is impossible.

(So basically, this hypothetical tag would include things like: post #9602198, post #9602483, post #9602264. This would exclude things like (all NSFW) post #9602222, post #9602204, post #9601923, because these kinds of male characters are not only out of focus, but if they are in focus, their presence is heavily diminished in favor of the female character.)

How viable is this sort of tag, do you think? And while I titled this thread with "Mixed Focus", I don't think that should really be the name.

(Also, I realized halfway through writing this that this is partially a rewrite at topic #30098 to see if I can figure out a way to exclude mob characters if individual tags don't exactly work. Though the main goal is to have people to be able to search for mixed-sex interactions, without it necessarily being romantic and/or sexual, yanno?)

You know, that is true...And we already go with "female" and "male", a la female focus and male focus (even if female focus is not a tag anyone wants, but my point stands). So would this be a tag people would like to see an attempt at making (though through a BUR here of course)?

I think this could have value but would probably be significantly undertagged (for instance, male_focus is overwhelmingly posts without girls at all, though there are a respectable amount of images within "male_focus (1girl or multiple_girls)")

People have proposed duo, trio, etc tags before in order to find posts focused on a certain number of characters. That idea could be extended to mixed duo, mixed trio, etc for finding mixed groups of characters.

My main qualm is that I think people will inevitably try to dilute it to include background characters and out of frame hentai guys, which is exactly what you don't want. Uploaders love to create mental checklists like "if post has 1girl and 1boy, then add mixed duo" regardless of whether it fits the tag.

Yeah, that's my main worry proposing this tag (and probably why the tags above never got made in spite of the fact they'd be very useful...If people stuck to named characters like they should). I so want to propose something akin to a "named characters only" rule to put in the wiki, but that requires people to read said wiki (which time and time again they prove they do not). So I got like...no clue how to prevent this from happening, and I'm not sure if there even is a way to prevent that.

So unless there's a good way to discourage such dilution, it'd probably be better to just sit on my thumbs with this tag idea. Even if I do like the idea of mixed duo, mixed trio, etc...

Also, we's need to change solo into 1person, and that'd be its own mess.

No? Otherwise you're also suggesting that we change 1girl to sologirl.

I suppose the real difference between duo/trio and 2people/3people here is that duo would at least force people to think before they tag it on "one foreground character and one background character", but with how autistic our users are I don't think it'll make a difference.

Ah. I didn't understand what you meant there, sorry.

Yeah, me neither. I really don't think the name would change much here, which is probably why anything like these tags never worked out.

Only partially related, but wouldn't make more sense to call these tags 2people, 3people etc? Unless we want a quartet and sextuple tag...

Those are far too close to the current counter tags. The idea is to have tags where all the characters are in focus; users who see a tag called 2people will just assume it applies to all the posts Knowledge Seeker specifically listed as exclusions.

Yeah, duo, trio, 2people, 3people and so on are just lots of mistagging waiting to happen , maybe we could do stuff like duo focus, trio focus and so on to emphasize that it should be the main subject of the image and not just background or incidental characters, we could also have stuff like mixed duo if we want to be more granular.
