The latter should really be fingernails then, as nail should refer to the carpentry tool.
There really isn't a need to manually retag nails to fingernails. It should be mass edited over to fingernails, since the nails tag is used for fingernails right now, and the majority of the images will be of the subject. If there is any incorrectly tagged type of nails, then it'd be better to dig through it after they've been migrated to fingernails as incorrect images will be of the minority amongst the images. In short it's easier having to search through and manually move the minority than having to search and manually move the majority.
If we're going to be going with this change, we should probably get a change for long_nails tag as well and use long_fingernails instead. That could probably be accomplished with an alias, since long_nails in general use seems exclusively the fingernail variety. There are currently a few long toenails under a long_nails toes search, but there are also some in there where the toenails are short with the fingernails being long. The name change would also make it match then the naming scheme for the long_toenails tag as well.

Should be changed to implicate fingernails and the images mass edited.

Something must have gone wrong with the last mass edit, as the long_fingernails tag is now gone (see history on e.g. post #346800).
The nails tag seems untouched however, so if this can't be reverted, readding long_fingernails on posts tagged both fingernails nails should do the trick (with possible false positives on posts manually tagged as such since 09/21).

The hell...? I have no idea how this happened.
Anyway I found the block of edits in my tag history so I'm undoing them now (will just take some time).
