Why are child posts not listed in the main index?

Posted under General

I've been uploading images fro mthe CG set Sweet Home by Kiryama Taichi, and I've noticed now that child posts are not posted to the main index (titled as "/"). What reason is there for this? Often times there is a good reason to post a child image--a subsequent doujin page or an image that's part of a scene in a CG set. That's what the child image function is for.

The problem is that people tend to rate child posts with fewer frequency as they do with parent posts, because parent posts are featured on the front page without any search required to find it. Not showing child images in the main index is like encouraging me not to use the child image function because I know that they'll be rated lower. Child images should be given the same priority as other images.

This is to avoid people spamming the front page with long series of very similar images, basically.

It's your own choice whether you think something should be childed or not, but when you upload an entire doujin and don't child the posts, it's more likely that I won't approve them. And if I do approve them, I'll parent/child them myself.

For CG sets, assuming they're not 260 variations of the same image, I think pools are often a better option than parenting.

As an aside, don't worry so much about ratings.

Agreed. I give little to no weight to someone's average rating when sending an invite. It's too easy to get a high rating by just uploading random porn (generic porn usually scores higher than good "clean" art) or by watching for the highest scoring artists and simply stalking them. When 20 different people try to upload the latest Ishikei and get the inevitable 50+ score, the fact that you (generic 'you' here) got to it 30 seconds before someone else, because you're unemployed and can be on danbooru all day or live in a different time zone and can upload while everyone else is asleep doesn't impress me, because it could have been anyone else just as easily ten minutes later.

So yeah, scores are of rather limited use in determining the "worth" of a member. Don't stress over them. 1.5 or 15.0, it's all good. Of course, if you're getting lots of negatives, that's something a bit different.

One thing about child posts: the first of the set to be uploaded is not always the right one to make the parent.

For example, if an artist does a sketch of an image, which gets posted, then he puts up the finished, full-color version a week later...when the color image gets uploaded, IT should be the parent. Or if the artist puts a low-res sample up first, then a while later puts up a high-res version, the high-res image should be the parent if both versions get posted here.

Yeah, some artists upload their stuff in stages. The finished product should be the parent. Now if it's later modified a bit (like this trend on pixiv of editing existing images to look like magazine covers), being last doesn't automatically make it the parent any more than being first does. It's generally common sense, though.
