Tag aliases: humans characters of Pokémon, English -> Japanese

Posted under General

Reason:

  • To have the English names as alternative tags for human characters of Pokémon.

There are a lot of them (and most likely even more characters to be created in the future), so I'd encourage more people to continue posting these requests here.

Note: I'm keeping in mind that, as standard practice for this series, virtually all human characters without surnames have the "(pokemon)" qualifier.

So I see (I really need to go beat Black). They also seem to have given names in English, though I don't know where the female's pops up.

Female Araragi is called Aurea Juniper ("Aurea" was only given in the official English guidebook, not in-game), while her father is Cedric Juniper. I should mention that I'm cribbing notes from TV Tropes, but I'm fairly sure they're accurate.

My philosophy has been to suggest an alias after a certain threshold of posts (wanna say 30). But, yeah, buncha names, here.

30-50 is generally the recommended minimum threshold, yes.

I can verify Cedric is accurate, but I've never Aurea either. We could go with Aurea_Juniper as the primary but I think Professor_Juniper should at least be aliased to it. Her father only technically has the name, the game almost always referred to him by his name and her as Professor Juniper.

One gripe about the list, though. Five whole aliases just for Professor Oak who doesn't even have 50 images under his belt? Full english name and at least one form of Professor_Oak (personally prefer the full version) should be fine. Oak_(pokemon) is particularly useless considering it's completely ambiguous. It's a bit excessive to request every imaginable variation of a name for these kinds of things.

Other than that I support the idea. I can never remember the japanese names since I couldn't care less about the anime.

I have to agree with Rampardos. Some of those aliases don't seem necessary. brock_(pokemon) for example doesn't seem necessary because there's one character currently (and likely ever) that has "Brock" as a given name. Misty is more ambiguous so I can understand aliasing the qualifier.

I would take the following off the list.

Oak for the reasons given by Rampardos, Gary and Ash both have surnames so they aren't ambiguous, and Brock and Flannery for my reason given earlier in this post.

...as I suppose it would be somewhat frustrating having to guess or remember that specifically ash_(pokemon), flannery_(pokemon), brock_(pokemon) and gary_(pokemon) are exceptions that should NOT ever have the qualifiers. (especially since Ash, Gary and Brock are among the best-known Pokémon characters; and Flannery is well-known enough, too, as a Gym Leader)

In other words: I do support the Ash/Flannery/Brock/Gary aliases with (pokemon) in the end, for orthogonality with the big system of virtually always using that qualifier.

(Well, we have a few very underused tags like brock_samson that share these names, which could be an additional argument in favor of having brock_(pokemon); but, frankly, my best guess is that they don't count to make "brock" and "ash" absolutely ambiguous.)

On the one hand, I would probably use oak_(pokemon) if it existed. I, personally, don't think it is that ambiguous, because AFAIK nobody calls his grandchildren Mr. and Ms. Oak... On the other hand, if other people prefer to avoid using the surname of Blue Oak and Daisy Oak that way, I wouldn't mind taking this alias off the list.

EDIT:

Some wording.

Updated

You're looking at this awfully backwards. You wouldn't have to remember that ash_(pokemon) doesn't exist, you would only have to remember his full name. Full character names are what people should expect to use, and it's not like his full name isn't well known.

It would actually be more misleading to make people think that they should be able to search any variation of a name and get a result, since extensive and thorough alias lists are not common. Instead, people learn Danbooru's standards for names in tags, like Japanese ordering, and don't get used to convenient aliases.

I'll admit I'm nitpicking, and it's fine if these aliases go through, but I just think it's important to be consistent.

For the record, though, I think the brock_(pokemon) alias is fine.

Fair enough; I see we don't want to teach people to try any name variation. But, in any case, I suppose an "extensive and thorough alias list" following the simple rule "first-name in English, followed by (pokemon)" not do any harm.

Especially, since most (but not all) of the names I listed already have 30 or more posts. Gym Leaders tend to be pretty well-known and often drawn. You can see the bold names in list of pokemon characters.

Interestingly, I just remembered that we have odamaki_(pokemon) and odamaki_sapphire as two different characters. And, once more, I don't see an inherent ambiguity here. Nobody calls Sapphire just "Odamaki".

Man, glad I'm not the one typing it this time. But we're missing out on some of the professors. Namely Elm, Birch, and Rowan, though there's no prof._juniper in place.

I think we could have at least these aliases:

create alias elm_(pokemon) -> utsugi_(pokemon)
create alias birch_(pokemon) -> odamaki_(pokemon)
create alias rowan_(pokemon) -> nanakamado_(pokemon)
create alias (this one already exists) juniper_(pokemon) -> araragi_(pokemon)
create alias aurea_juniper -> araragi_(pokemon)

Their versions with "professor" would be these:

(They are well-known as "professor ...", but I don't know if having multiple aliases this way could be controversial. Rampardos said: "One gripe about the list, though. create alias professor_elm -> utsugi_(pokemon)
create alias professor_birch -> odamaki_(pokemon)
create alias professor_rowan -> nanakamado_(pokemon)
(this one already exists) professor_juniper -> araragi_(pokemon)
create alias prof._elm -> utsugi_(pokemon)
create alias prof._birch -> odamaki_(pokemon)
create alias prof._rowan -> nanakamado_(pokemon)
create alias prof._juniper -> araragi_(pokemon)
create alias prof_elm -> utsugi_(pokemon)
create alias prof_birch -> odamaki_(pokemon)
create alias prof_rowan -> nanakamado_(pokemon)
create alias prof_juniper -> araragi_(pokemon)

EDIT:

Converted the list to the format "create alias tag1 -> tag2".
