Character variation tags

Posted under General

I personally believe they should stay blue, as they usually indicate aspects of a character or more of an 'alternate character' or alternate persona than a primary character identifier. The character character should be a character tag, anything else is more of a persona in my opinion...if that makes sense.

I think they should be green, because they're tags about character information.

howto:tag doesn't touch on this aspect. If "info about a character" (which is a bit vague) is minimally enough to qualify a tag as a character tag, it would be nice if information like that was wiki'd. I'd do it myself but I'm afraid of touching the howto: wiki pages.

Edit: wording in quoted post was changed to include character affiliation, ignore what I said.

Yes, and I argued sometime later that we shouldn't base policy on chartags searches because the system is inherently flawed to begin with, and lowering the status of some tags that pertain to character identity just to make that broken system limp along is poor policy.

Well to be honest it does exactly what it's supposed to do, people have just completely used it for the wrong thing and have forced tags that should have been green to being blue to try and make it operate according to their incorrect assumption of what the thing should be doing. It was never meant to identify the absolute number of characters in an image, and we never should have tried to doctor up the tags to make it try and act as if it was supposed to.

I support NWF's opinion here, as I have in the past. A tag that refers to a named animate entity in a post should be tagged as a character even if it's a variation or component of another character. See also Myon, which at some point got aliased to Konpaku Youmu (ghost) apparently. Character tag counts are nice, but they break for many reasons and as such, aren't worth bending policy to try to make them work.

Now that people have been working heavily on solo and Xgirls/boys tags, I can get behind these character modifiers turned green again.

That said, until we get that numchars suggestion working (if ever), the chartag metatag keeps doing a handy job nothing else does (with chartags:>X and chartags:<X in particular) and no matter how unintended it was.
