lens is an exceptionally poor name, being used for glasses lenses, magnifying glasses, camera lenses, robotic eyes, sniper scopes and even regular lens flare due to its sheer ambiguity.

deprecate camera_lens
people have already voted on the above BUR, so I'm opting to post a new one instead of editing this in.
camera lens is another ambiguous tag that has led to many viewfinder mistags, as well as more pointless camera-lens-on-camera posts. the tag can be used with too many situations to correctly alias, making a deprecation the better choice.
I've moved lens eye posts to their proper tag, and will move any applicable camera lens posts to lens focus and detached camera lens following some discussions in the Discord.

post #4096870, how do we tag this? It's a lens.

there are similar results (standalone lenses) for both glass lens and optical lens on Google, but optical lens implies its use as an optic of some kind so I would prefer glass lens.

There's also things like post #5509207 which are detached lenses but not camera lenses nor glass lenses.
Wikipedia lists these telescope eyepieces as simply "eyepiece", (which is already a tag, and a bad one at that) so we should go for the alternative ocular lens. Not the most findable, so we can make microscope lens and telescope lens utility aliases if need be.
I was going to suggest eyepiece, but that tag is in use for all sorts of miscellaneous eyewear (which isn't the standard definition of "eyepiece.")
I think the problem with lens is not that there aren't occasions on which it's the most suitable tag, but that the tag name inherently invites misuse, due to how many types of lenses there are that should be tagged as something more specific. It seems "eyepiece" has a similar problem, though, and might get mistagged a lot even if it's cleaned out.
Maybe ocular would work?
Edit: Sniped in full. I have no personal preference between "ocular" and "ocular lens."

I'm going to push an eyepiece deprecation in little bit because the tag sucks and is slapped on all kinds of random eyewear people can't name, most of which is Ghetsis' scouter? The wiki is a bit uninformative, but that's what it looks like.

create alias detached_camera_lens -> detached_lens
Following nonamethanks' post above, I realize that detached camera lens may be a bit too granular when these are all lenses. The alternative is making detached ocular lens, but I don't know if we need to be so specific for an already niche concept.
