I haven't delved into that School Days franchise either, but the descriptions on TVTropes seem to indicate he is a jerkass underneath the exterior. Also, the same artist has been drawing the guy will a number of the other GuP girls, although I can't tell if they are supposed to be in the same continuity.

If you're playing the game, you can have Makoto be a cheating bastard or someone who remains faithful to one girl being either Kotonoha or Sekai. Now if we're talking about the anime, he's definitely a piece of shit there.

The game had choices like normal, with a "be faithful" route to either of two girls, or a harem route if you don't screw up trying to pull it off... but the game was most known for its excessively violent animated bad ends (complete with gallons of high-pressure blood), so the anime went for the main character doing the absolute dumbest shit a person could do to set up a worst ending, which was in turn so bloody that the network had to replace the final episode with stock footage of a boat in a lake, leading to the "Nice Boat" meme. (Worth noting is that the two main girls were previously best friends - the main guy asks one of the girls, who has a crush on him, to introduce him to her friend, which she's initially willing to step aside and allow, but then starts to change her mind especially if the guy actively pursues her, so there's a lot of 'you backstabbing bitch' drama backed into the love triangle.)

also don't forget because of Makoto's lineage he's also related to the cast in the 3rd or 4th degree Kotonoha's family is the only one not related to him

remember lads Makoto's dad is Tomaru Sawagoe who also happens to be related to Setsuna and Sekai through one of his sons, whose mothers were impregnated by Tomaru Sawagowe making them his half grand children and neice?, who were born from his adopted sister who he impregnated yes its a mess but hey its the overflow verse
