I'm going to assume you're an anime watcher only cause thats mostly how the anime handle Himmel's death, but the manga had a whole different scene. He was mourned at a cathedral, with the whole town having come to pay respects, he lived alone and never married most likely because he loved no else but frieren, and while he WAS obsessed with his popularity it was never to a degree that he would leverage it for his own profit (aside from the statues made of him)
