Nuke priestess

Posted under Tags

I don't think the tag should be nuked, just cleaned up to where it's based on outfit (like with the archetypal RPG priestess with robe and staff, etc.), removing the canon and nun/miko depictions that don't fit that image.

Why has priestess not already been aliased to priest? Having a gender-specific tag in this case is about as pointless as the old steward and stewardess tags. If we need a tag for a specific outfit, it needs to be something other than merely the female version of another tag.

The priest tag is full of fantasy RPG costumes to begin with, so it's not like priestess has some unique utility in that aspect. Apart from the canon tagging, the only practical difference between the two tags right now is that priestess is female-only and priest is apparently gender-neutral.

EDIT: Incidentally, there's an undefined cleric tag as well, in case two tags for the same thing wasn't enough.

Are occupation tags even useful to begin with, especially with the aforementioned canon tag polluting? I probably won't assume characters such as Barbara are a priestess just by looking at her (despite canonically being one)? What's next, are we gonna start tagging her sister Jean as a knight based on her profession alone (don't)?

Although some occupation tags are pretty specific (ie. pirate), others (like priestess) are too broad and prone to useless canon tagging.

Barbara isn't even canonically a priestess. She's a deacon, which is a rank lower than priest.

Occupation/canon tags are ultimately costume tags. Think of how we handled witch, maid, sorcerer, etc. Those that can't be reasonably policed to a specific costume nuked. Those that are several words for the same thing, like rogue and thief, need to be comined if they don't fall into the previous group.

The canon tagging issue is particularly egregious when people mistag priestess for Yae Miko and Barbara even when they aren't wearing their default clothing (which is already mistagged as "priestess" to begin with), even in cases where they are outright nude (such as post #5177085).

In posts such as post #5140300, Yae gets tagged as "priestess" despite the fact that her outfit was adapted and repurposed into a standard cheerleader outfit (therefore no longer resembling anything close to a "priestess" garb). The same could be said for post #5147103, where she is tagged "priestess" even though she is wearing a regular serafuku.

Apparently, many people think that a character should always be tagged their canon profession, no matter what clothes they wear, even if they are wearing nothing at all.

I have already mentioned it in the miko tag discussion, but i think that profession tags should be based on both what a character wears and what they're doing or general setting.
In this case, if an artwork makes the character's profession clear through accessories or setting, regardless of clothing, i don't see why it should not be tagged as that profession. For example, post #441939 makes it clear that the character is a miko.
Conversely, if an artwork does not feature profession clothes and the setting does not feature any particular hint towards the character's profession, it should not be tagged.

For priestess, i don't think it should be nuked, but at the same time it looks like a conglomeration of miko, cleric, and nun, among more fantasy design which fall in a middle spot.
The wiki says that it's supposed to be a "female priest", and the priest tag is a mix of christian priest and fantasy ones, a distinction priestess has with nun.
I think we should first draw a line and say what priestess and priest are supposed to be in the first place. Are they supposed to cover outfits that don't fall in other tags? Is priestess supposed to specifically be eastern-influence priestesses, or more fantasy ones? Priest covers a lot of designs, from more traditional christian outfits in post #5135437, to more fantasy outfits like post #3303471, to more eastern ones in post #3515248 and tribal ones in post #5177989.

Would aliasing priest and priestess to cleric (and giving it a wiki) be an option? It might reduce the amount of misstags a bit and could still be useful for people searching for religious garb.

it is rather sexist to remove Priestess as a tag; it was very honoured in Asia and points east as a noble calling. To pretend they were the same as Priests would have offended them just as it would to call an Abbess a Bishop.
